Die hier publizierten Beiträge stellen eine Auswahl von Untersu- chungsergebnissen aus unserer fünfjährigen Forschungsarbeit über das Protestverhalten von Jugendlichen dar. Sie sind im Rahmen zweier Projekte entstanden, die vom Bundesministerium für Ju- gend, Familie, Frauen und Gesundheit in Auftrag gegeben und am Zentrum für Psychosomatische Medizin der Universität Gießen durchgeführt wurden: Im ersten Projekt (1982 - 1983) lag der Schwerpunkt auf den Kerngruppen des neuen Jugendprotestes: den Hausbesetzern, den Punks und den Alternativen. Im zweiten Pro- jekt (1985 - 1987) richtete sich unser Forschungsinteresse auf die Weiterentwicklung dieser Protestszene nach Abflauen der Bewe- gung und auf andere ins Blickfeld rückende Protestgruppen, z. B. Skinheads, Autonome und Friedensbewegte. Das Forschungsvorhaben wurde 1981 angeregt durch den turbu- lenten Verlauf einer Diskussion im Zweiten Deutschen Fernsehen zwischen jugendlichen Hausbesetzern, Punks und Vertretern aus Politik, Kultur und Wissenschaft, an der auch der damalige Fami- lienminister Heiner Geißler und Prof. Dr. Dr. Horst Eberhard Richter teilnahmen. Den aufbrechenden Emotionen und Aggres- sionen auf seiten der Jugendlichen standen Erschrecken, Rat- und Hilflosigkeit auf seiten der politischen, kulturellen und wissen- schaftlichen Repräsentanten gegenüber. Der viel beschworene "Dialog" zwischen den protestierenden Jugendlichen und den eta- blierten Erwachsenen - so lautete eine der Schlußfolgerungen, die den Ausschlag zu dem Forschungsvorhaben gaben - läßt sich nicht von heute auf morgen erzwingen, schon gar nicht vor einem großen Publikum. Vielmehr gilt es zunächst, genauere Einsicht zu gewin- nen, was die Anhänger der verschiedenen Protestgruppen denken und fühlen, was sie ängstigt und welche Hoffnungen sie hegen.
